I’m not going to lie, having to choose a top five for this post was hard for me. Like most book lovers, I had a hard time narrowing it down because I have a lot of books I want to read. Okay, Okay, a lot is a major understatement. I’ll probably never finish all of the books on my list. Anyway, let’s get to it! These are the five books that are at the top of my To Be Read List right now:
- Educated by Tara Westover (ISBN-13: 978-0399590504)
I know that I’m totally late to this party, but fashionably late is still a thing right? This book has came with high praise in the reading community. Educated is Tara Westover’s memoir about growing up in a different environment than many others. As a young girl she did not experience school, doctors, or other common parts of life, but she worked her way to a PhD despite her circumstances. I may not be able to relate to Tara’s story, but I feel it will be a very captivating read. Although I haven’t found many memoirs that I have loved, I believe this may be one that I do. Tara has taken her life and childhood and is allowing readers to live and see the world through her eyes. I feel that is a wonderful and beautiful thing for a writer to do. I am extremely excited to get my hands on this book!
- Clean by Juno Dawson & James Dawson (ISBN-13: 978-1786540362)
Let me just go ahead and let the cat out of the bag: I am OBSESSED with books involving drug abuse and/or rehabs. I know that may sound odd, but I dated an addict for several years who died from a heroin overdose last year. From the descriptions I have read, Clean is about a girl who overdoses and her and the other patients’ journeys before and after rehab. Books with this subject matter make me feel like I am able to relate to the story and even see some things from an addict’s point of view. Something I always felt I couldn’t do with the man I dated. Although sometimes it does bring up sadness for me, it also allows me to be thankful I never endured the demons that addicts do. Clean has many five star reviews and has received a lot of admiration as a gritty and life-like story and I can not wait to read it!
- Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell (ISBN-13: 978-1501154652)
I have been an avid mystery/thriller reader lately. I have heard wonderful things about this book from friends so I quickly added it to my list when I read the synopsis. Then She Was Gone is a book about a woman whose daughter disappeared. Years later, still with no answers, she is trying to move on with her life and falls in love. However, when she is introduced to her new beloved’s daughter she realizes that she looks just like her daughter that disappeared ten years earlier. I cannot wait to dive into this book and see how it plays out and what the connection is, if there is one!
- The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn (ISBN-13: 978-0062678416)
Unreliable narrators are one of my favorite things about reading thrillers. I get the feeling from the synopsis and reviews I’ve read of this book that the narrator is not completely believable which I am totally here for! The Woman in the Window is about a woman who is a recluse that watches her neighbors to get through the days. One day she sees something she isn’t supposed to, or maybe she just imagined it. Twisty story lines are my favorite and I am ecstatic to see how this book plays out.
- Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney (ISBN-13: 978-1250144850)
Psychological thrillers are the mind games of books, and I am totally a fan if you can’t tell. Unlike most people, I enjoy when a book alternates between past and present and gives you a good backstory to lean on. Sometimes I Lie is about a woman in a coma who believes her husband doesn’t love her anymore and may have had something to do with how she ended up there. Just reading the synopsis I am in total suspense and want to know how this ends.
